The Political Divide

The U.S. gained 431,00 jobs in March; one-third of the country thinks we are losing jobs

According to an editorial in the Tampa Bay Times on April 13, 2022, "a recent poll by the Global Strategy Group showed that 37% of Americans thought that the nation had lost jobs in the last year. And only 28% thought jobs had been gained." The reality is that in March alone, the country added 431,000 jobs and 6.2 million jobs in the last year, “one of the best jobs performances in U.S. history.” According to the opinion piece and a  poll by The Economist/YouGov found "69% of Americans believe the economy is fair or poor. However, 43% of Biden voters rate the economy as excellent or good, and only seven percent of Trump voters do."  The piece concludes that “it seems that Republican and Democratic voters live in different worlds.”

Climate Change

Failure to act on climate change could cost the U.S. $14.5 trillion by 2070

A new report by Deloitte says climate action can drive our economic future and that we are at a turning point. The consulting firm says that “if left unchecked, the economic cost of climate change in the United States alone could reach $14.5 trillion by 2070.” The firm says, “acting now will not only save the United States from the economic cost of unchecked climate change but could also lead to a $3 trillion increase in GDP by 2070. Our analysis shows that achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 isn’t just an aspirational goal—it’s an economic growth imperative."

Santiago, Chile, is preparing to ration water in response to an unprecedented drought

In part due to climate change, during the past 30 years the availability of water in Santiago, Chile, has declined by 37%. The city is preparing a drought response strategy that might mean there won’t be enough water for everyone who lives there. Santiago is entering its 13th year of drought, and, according to an EcoWatch article on April 13, 2022, has developed a water rationing plan. Whether it is implemented will depend upon the levels of rain this winter. “If it is put into place, the water rationing plan will affect 1,545,000 households supplied by the Maipo River and 142,000 households that get their water from the Mapocho River.” Santiago’s population is six million.

Future of Work / The Economy

Employee benefits are a key reason employees stay

According to an April 19, 2022, article in Forbes, health and retirement benefits are two key reasons employees join and stay with a company. A survey by Willis Towers Watson found:

  • 60% said their employers’ retirement benefits as an important reason they remain with their current employer, versus 41% in 2010.
  • 47% said their company’s retirement programs and healthcare benefits (48%) were important reasons why they joined the company in the first place. In 2010, those numbers were 25% and 32%, respectively.
  • Healthcare benefits were so important that 46% said they preferred to have better benefits than a better paycheck, while 59% said they would pay more for better retirement benefits.

Zillennials are the most unsatisfied workers

Zillennials are the gap generation between millennials and Gen Z workers, born between 1993 and 1998. According to a study in MetLife as reported in Fortune on April 20, 2022, these “overlooked middle children sandwiched between two higher-profile generations are not happy at work.” Only 57% say they are satisfied with their jobs, compared with 66% for millennials and a comparable 58% for Gen Z workers. 54% say working for a company with a strong mission is a must-have-benefit.

Covid-19

“Remember to show understanding and patience with others.”

That was Delta Airlines’ message to its employees when the federal court unexpectedly lifted the mask mandate on travelers. Inc. Magazine called the response “the best they had seen yet.”

China lockdowns could cripple global supply chains

The 373 million Chinese people currently in lockdown live in cities generating 40% of China’s gross domestic product. As a result, global supply chains are set to take a hit, according to an April 19, 2022, article in Fortune. “Even with air and ocean ports open, the length of the shutdown could make this iteration the most significant logistics disruption since the start of the pandemic,” according to the shipping company Freightos. The U.S. imported $435 billion in goods from China in 2020, and “once lockdowns end, there’s going to be an ‘overwhelming movement of goods’ that cripples supply chains.”
