Welcome to the eleventh 2020 edition of The Nett Report. Given the uncertainty of the coronavirus crisis, we are publishing this report to provide our clients and friends with new perspectives and insights in hopes of stimulating creative thinking in the weeks and months to come. Feel free to share with friends! Links to the first ten 2020 reports can be found here.
Survey Results: when will the pandemic end?
In the August 7 Nett Report, we asked readers to take a survey with the following three questions:
- When do you think the pandemic will be over, and we will get back to normal?
- When will we be able to attend group gatherings like sporting events, movies, concerts, etc.?
- What do you think needs to be done to end the pandemic?
We closed the survey on August 20 and are pleased to share the results. We received 130 responses from readers and a few social media contributions. While not a scientific, statistically relevant survey, the results were still informative since our readership is well-informed and keeps up-to-date about current events. Thanks to all who took the time to complete the survey! Here are the results:
When do you think the pandemic will be over, and we will get back to normal?
This question was intended to capture the pulse of when the pandemic will be behind us.
- 44% - almost half, think things will return to normal by the second half of 2021, a year away.
- 23% - were more hopeful, thinking it could happen by the end of this year or in the first half of next
- 33% think it will take longer, if ever, to return to normal.
When will we be able to attend group gatherings like sporting events, movies, concerts, etc.?
Respondents were marginally more hopeful about when group gatherings will be allowed.
- 47% - think it will happen in the second half of 2021
- 24% - think it will happen sooner
- 29% - think it will be in 2022 or beyond, if ever, to be able to attend group gatherings
What do you think needs to be done to end the pandemic?
This was an open-ended question requiring a text response. We categorized how many mentioned certain kinds of solutions. For instance, any solution that required a government mandate or change in elected official was placed in the "Leadership or Political" category. "Personal Actions" were solutions that individuals take responsibility for themselves (i.e. wear your mask, wash your hands). Here are the results:
- 52% - Leadership or political changes
- 47% - Vaccine
- 28% - Personal actions
- 16% - Testing and tracing
- 14% - Science
- 8% - Lockdown or quarantine
- 7% - Treatments
- 2% - Herd immunity
- 2% - Accept a new normal
- 2% - Create new (protective) technologies
The full report can be found in a blog on the Nettleton Strategies website, including a full list of the responses and charts. I recommend taking the time to scan through the responses. The word cloud above came from an analysis of the text responses.
When does Bill Gates think the pandemic will end? By the end of 2021
He didn’t take our survey, but philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates concurs with many of our readers. Gates told The Economist in an August 18, 2020, article that “by the end of 2021 a reasonably effective vaccine would be in mass production, and a large enough share of the world’s population would be immunized to halt the pandemic in its tracks.”
