Welcome to the eleventh 2020 edition of The Nett Report. Given the uncertainty of the coronavirus crisis, we are publishing this report to provide our clients and friends with new perspectives and insights in hopes of stimulating creative thinking in the weeks and months to come. Feel free to share with friends! Links to the first ten 2020 reports can be found here.

Survey Results: when will the pandemic end?

In the August 7 Nett Report, we asked readers to take a survey with the following three questions:

  • When do you think the pandemic will be over, and we will get back to normal?
  • When will we be able to attend group gatherings like sporting events, movies, concerts, etc.?
  • What do you think needs to be done to end the pandemic?

We closed the survey on August 20 and are pleased to share the results. We received 130 responses from readers and a few social media contributions. While not a scientific, statistically relevant survey, the results were still informative since our readership is well-informed and keeps up-to-date about current events. Thanks to all who took the time to complete the survey! Here are the results:

When do you think the pandemic will be over, and we will get back to normal?

This question was intended to capture the pulse of when the pandemic will be behind us.

  • 44% - almost half, think things will return to normal by the second half of 2021, a year away.
  • 23% - were more hopeful, thinking it could happen by the end of this year or in the first half of next
  • 33% think it will take longer, if ever, to return to normal.

When will we be able to attend group gatherings like sporting events, movies, concerts, etc.?

Respondents were marginally more hopeful about when group gatherings will be allowed.

  • 47% - think it will happen in the second half of 2021
  • 24% - think it will happen sooner
  • 29% - think it will be in 2022 or beyond, if ever, to be able to attend group gatherings

What do you think needs to be done to end the pandemic?

This was an open-ended question requiring a text response. We categorized how many mentioned certain kinds of solutions. For instance, any solution that required a government mandate or change in elected official was placed in the "Leadership or Political" category. "Personal Actions" were solutions that individuals take responsibility for themselves (i.e. wear your mask, wash your hands). Here are the results:

  • 52% - Leadership or political changes
  • 47% - Vaccine
  • 28% - Personal actions
  • 16% - Testing and tracing
  • 14% - Science
  • 8% - Lockdown or quarantine
  • 7% - Treatments
  • 2% - Herd immunity
  • 2% - Accept a new normal
  • 2% - Create new (protective) technologies

The full report can be found in a blog on the Nettleton Strategies website, including a full list of the responses and charts. I recommend taking the time to scan through the responses. The word cloud above came from an analysis of the text responses.

When does Bill Gates think the pandemic will end? By the end of 2021

He didn’t take our survey, but philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates concurs with many of our readers. Gates told The Economist in an August 18, 2020, article that “by the end of 2021 a reasonably effective vaccine would be in mass production, and a large enough share of the world’s population would be immunized to halt the pandemic in its tracks.”

Issues

Unexpected consequences of the pandemic on education in the U.K.

Due to the pandemic, the U.K.’s A-level exams, a big determinant of university placements, could not take place. The government introduced an algorithm estimating how students might have performed based on teachers’ input, results from mock A-level tests and how their school had performed in the past. Fortune’s August 17, CEO Daily reports the results were “downgrading for 280,000 students including, for example, outliers who were excellent performers at otherwise poorly-performing schools.” The impacts include: many kids now feel their lives have been ruined, legal threats, political battering of the government, and a revolt within the examination body.

Pandemic sets back efforts to phase out single-use plastics

Fortune reported on August 17, 2020, that “the COVID-19 pandemic has severely set back efforts to phase out single-use plastics, not just because of people flocking to disposable masks and takeaway containers, but also because of bans and taxes being rolled back and recycling activity being reduced."

Pregnant Hispanic mothers make up nearly half of Covid cases

“Nationwide, Hispanic or Latina mothers make up nearly half of the coronavirus cases among pregnant women,” according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collected from January 22 until the second week in August.

News Bites

Thanks to the pandemic, mattress sales are booming in the U.S.

Imports of mattresses are up 39% in the first six months of 2020 according to Plastics News KickstartProduction of mattresses has been shifting away from China to Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia in addition to new production in the U.S. “Why all the growth? Most likely, the coronavirus pandemic. With travel plans canceled, people are staying home and putting their vacation dollars into items like decks, pools and beds instead.”

What were citizens told to do in 1918 to address the Spanish Flu?

An article on Distractify on August 14, 2020, the site published a "Do's and Don't's List" from the 1918 pandemic. The website says it “proves we've learned absolutely nothing in 100 years.” Here are some familiar recommendations from the list:

  • Wear a mask
  • Wash your hands before each meal
  • Live in an abundance of fresh air, day and night

Solutions

Covid tracking app – should you download one?

The Washington Post’s technology columnist, Geoffrey A. Fowler, “usually warns people away from apps that track them.” In an August 18, 2020, Post article, he is recommending that people download a covid-tracking app that uses Bluetooth wireless signals to alert you when you've been in proximity to someone who tested positive. “To really discover the potential of this tech, lots and lots of us would need to use it. You’ve not got much to lose, and there’s a lot we could all gain,” he wrote.
