“It’s really hard to deal with all of that on your own and you shouldn’t have to.” – Ashley

Ashley never got to be a child. Her dad wasn’t around and she craved support from her mom - especially when she was sick or being bullied.

Her mom was stuck in a life of addiction and Ashley was on her own. As she became a teenager, she started down the same road as her mother – cutting herself and using drugs to dull her pain. By 19, she was living on the street.

Then she made the choice to not end up like her mother. She found a second family in StandUp For Kids.

You can help us prevent help young people like Ashley from a life of repeating unhealthy cycles. Donate now  or learn more about how you can get involved.

The StandUp For Kids national board just returned from a trip to Seattle, Bremerton and Olympia where we did outreach in each city. We met with the local programs and learned about their strategy and investigated ways the national organization can better support programs at the local level.

During the trip, we got a chance to meet Dezerae – one of the youth we served when she was younger. When she came to StandUp For Kids, she was very young, homeless, without any family support, and addicted to drugs. Today she has two kids and plans to go back to school to get her nursing degree. Ultimately, she’d like to open a nonprofit clinic to help homeless people get the proper medical care.
